Department of Siddha
-
Siddha system originated in Tamilnadu, the most ancient among the AYUSH (Ayurvedha, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) systems. Siddha system has the rich cultural heritage and health traditions. Siddhars, the forefathers of the Siddha system, transferred their rich knowledge to the suffering mankind through their disciples. Panchabooptham (Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Space), Mukkuttram (Vatha, Pitha kabha) and Arusuvaigal (Sweet, Bitter, Sour, Astringent, Salt & Pungent) are the basic principles of Siddha philosophy. The derangement in any of the Mukkuttram leads to diseases. The treatment is based on the correction of the vitiated Mukkuttram. Initially the system was taught through Gurukula method. They recorded their works in palm leaf manuscripts. From 1964 onwards the Siddha system evaluated as institution based medical degree.
The Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) were given an independent identity in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1995 by creating a separate Department, which was renamed as Department of Ayurvedha, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November 2003. As a Statutory Regulatory Council, The Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) was set up under the Acts of Parliament. The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedha and Siddha (CCRAS), is the apex research council of AYUSH, which governs the research activities.
In order to strengthen the Siddha system it was proposed to start a new Department for Siddha at this University campus, a resolution was passed at the 112th GC meeting held on 5-10-2001.Following that the Department of Siddha has been functioning from November 2007. The main objective to start the Department in this University is to standardize the Siddha drugs, clinical research and to provide the quality education and Research. The Department is marching forward towards the above goals.
