Department of Medical Genetics

  • The Department has been revived in September 2007 with the appointment of a Professor and Two Lecturers.

    Activities of Department

    • Genetic Clinic
      • Genetic Clinic is being conducted daily in The Department of Medical Genetics, The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Guindy, Chennai.
      • Patients, referred from Government and private institutions are being registered and Counseled in the genetic clinic.
      • A genetic clinic is being conducted every Wednesday at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, Chennai. The clinic was started on May 7th, 2008.
      • Genetic Clinic is also conducted every tuesday at Kasturibha Gandhi Government Hospital, Chennai
      • Patients are referred to the Genetic Clinic in the University on Monday, Thursday and Friday.
    • Chennai Twin Registry
      • The Chennai Twin Registry was inaugurated by the Worshipful Mayor of Chennai Thiru.M Subramaniam on 21.07.2008.
      • The Chennai Twin Registry is the first of its kind in India.
      • A MoU was signed between The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. medical University and the Srilankan twin registry, represented by Dr.Athula Sumathipala, King's College, London, on 21.07.2008 for collaboration in setting up " The Chennai Twin Registry" and in the area of twin research.
      • Twins are being registered in the Genetic clinics, both at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital and at the Department. Twins of all walks and ages are being registered.
      • The Department is keen to promote Preventive Genetic Services. We are offering Cytogenetic analysis to our patients. Research proposals have been sent for common genetic disorders like Down syndrome, Fragile X and Thallasemia.
      • We want to establish a Regional Reference Center for Genetic Disorders.

    Awards & Honours

    • Dr Prema Lakshminarayana was invited to give The Deivasahayam memorial oration at the meeting of the Tamilnadu assosciation for Occupational Health at Chennai on 6th Dec 2009. She was presented with acertificate and Medal.
